The pineal gland is a small cone-shaped structure at the center of the brain that makes melatonin, the hormone marking biological night. Light reaching the eyes suppresses its output and darkness permits it, so the level climbs through the evening and falls again before waking. It acts as a timing signal to the rest of the body rather than as a sleeping agent.

How does light reach a gland buried in the brain?

The gland itself sees nothing. Specialized cells in the retina, separate from those used for vision and most sensitive to blue light, signal a small cluster in the hypothalamus that holds the body's master clock. From there the path is long and indirect: down into the spinal cord, out to a nerve junction beside the neck, and back up alongside blood vessels to reach the pineal from the outside. That roundabout wiring is why the eyes govern a structure in the middle of the head, and why damage anywhere along the route can flatten the melatonin rhythm without touching the gland at all. The pineal also sits outside the barrier that shields most of the brain from the bloodstream, so what it releases enters the circulation directly.

What does melatonin actually do?

It reports the time rather than inducing sleep. Its rise tells organs throughout the body that night has begun, and those organs, which keep clocks of their own, use the signal to stay aligned with one another. In seasonally breeding animals the length of the nightly rise encodes day length and drives the breeding cycle; in people the same signal has a weaker but measurable role. Melatonin also acts back on the master clock, which is why its effect depends on timing: the same hormone can pull the clock earlier or later according to when it arrives. Blue-rich light late in the evening suppresses the rise and delays it, which is the mechanism behind sleep timing drifting later.

Why does it show up on brain scans?

Granules of calcium and phosphate accumulate inside the gland with age, described as brain sand, and they become dense enough to appear on plain radiographs and on computed tomography. It is one of the few structures inside the skull that normally calcifies, it lies on the midline, and before cross-sectional imaging existed a pineal shifted to one side on a skull film was taken as evidence of a mass pushing it across. The calcification itself is a normal age change, not a disease. The gland is often mentioned in the same breath as the pituitary gland because both are small midline endocrine structures, but their outputs and their controls have nothing in common.
