Definition of atorvastatin
Atorvastatin is a statin, a medicine that blocks HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol. Blocking it lowers cholesterol production, and the liver responds by pulling more LDL cholesterol out of the blood, which is what brings the measured level down. It is prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and related events.
How does it lower cholesterol?

Atorvastatin is broken down by an enzyme system that many other drugs and grapefruit juice also use, so its level can climb when those are combined with it, which is why interaction checks are routine whenever a new medication is added.
