An intravenous injection is the delivery of a medicine or fluid directly into a vein through a needle or a thin tube. Because the drug enters the bloodstream at once, it reaches the whole body without having to be absorbed, and the full dose given is the dose that acts. That makes it the fastest route and the hardest one to undo.

Why give a drug this way?

Every other route needs the drug to be absorbed before it can act, and absorption is variable. A tablet may be affected by food, by stomach acid, or by processing in the liver before it reaches the circulation at all. Nothing intervenes here: the entire dose is placed in the bloodstream and is available immediately. That predictability matters where an exact amount is needed, where a drug would be destroyed in the gut, where a person cannot swallow, or where an effect is required within seconds. Large volumes of fluid can also be replaced this way, which no other route allows.

An intramuscular injection leaves the drug in muscle, where local vessels pick it up over minutes. That delay is sometimes exactly what is wanted, since it smooths out the peak.

What is the difference from an infusion?

An injection is pushed in over seconds to a few minutes, often called a bolus or a push. An intravenous infusion is delivered gradually over a longer period, controlled by gravity or by a pump. The distinction is not merely practical. Some drugs cause serious effects when the concentration climbs rapidly, so they are given slowly whatever the total amount, and others run continuously to hold a steady level in the blood.

What can go wrong?

Because the dose cannot be retrieved, an error or an allergic reaction unfolds with nothing to slow it. Local problems are commoner: bruising, inflammation of the vein, and leakage into surrounding tissue, which damages it when the drug is an irritant. Infection can be introduced straight into the bloodstream, which is why the intravenous route demands strict technique and why lines are inspected and replaced on schedule. Air entering the line is a rare but serious hazard.
