Meaning of TM: Distinctive less for what happens during practice than for how tightly the method and the teaching of it are standardized.

Definition of TM

TM, or Transcendental Meditation, is a standardized meditation technique practiced sitting with the eyes closed while silently repeating an assigned sound, called a mantra, for a set period twice a day. It is taught only by certified instructors following a fixed course, and the name is a registered trademark held by a specific organization.

How is it practiced?

A session is deliberately undemanding. The practitioner sits comfortably, closes the eyes and repeats the mantra silently, letting attention return to it whenever thoughts drift, without trying to concentrate or to empty the mind. Sessions last about twenty minutes and are usually done twice a day, once in the morning and once later. The mantra itself is assigned by the instructor and is not chosen for its meaning. Instruction follows a set sequence of sessions with a certified teacher, and that formal course, rather than any secret content, is what makes the technique a defined product rather than a general practice.

How does it differ from other meditation?

ApproachWhat the practitioner does
Transcendental MeditationRepeats an assigned mantra silently and effortlessly, allowing attention to settle on its own
Mindfulness meditationObserves breath, body sensations or thoughts as they occur, without judging or following them
Concentrative meditationHolds attention deliberately on a single object and returns it whenever it wanders
Guided relaxation techniqueFollows spoken instructions through muscle release, breathing or imagery

All of them produce a quiet, seated state, and the differences lie in what the mind is asked to do, not in the posture.

What has research looked at?

Most study of Transcendental Meditation has concerned stress and cardiovascular measures, above all blood pressure. Reviews describe small average reductions, with the caveat that many trials have been small, comparison groups have often been inactive rather than doing an alternative practice, and a share of the research has come from institutions affiliated with the organization that teaches the technique. Effects on anxiety and general wellbeing have also been examined, with similar limits. The practice itself carries little physical risk, and the trademark is a reminder that findings about this specific method do not automatically transfer to meditation in general, or the reverse.
