Definition of risk factor
A risk factor is anything linked to a higher chance of developing a disease. Age, inherited genes, infections, occupation, diet, tobacco, alcohol and where a person lives all qualify. Some can be changed and some cannot. A factor is identified by comparing groups that differ in exposure, so it describes a pattern across populations rather than a certainty for any one person.
Does a risk factor cause the disease?
Not necessarily, and this is where the term misleads most often. A risk factor is found by noticing that people with a certain feature develop a disease more often than people without it. That association can arise because the feature causes the disease, because both share a hidden third cause, or because the feature merely travels alongside something else. Carrying a lighter in a pocket predicts lung cancer, though only because it accompanies smoking. Calling a factor causal takes more than the association: consistency across studies, a dose relationship, a plausible mechanism, and evidence that removing the factor lowers the rate.

The split that matters most is whether anything can be done about a factor. Age and inherited genes set a baseline nobody can shift, yet they still guide decisions, because they determine when screening begins and how closely a family is followed. Behavioral and environmental factors are the ones that move, and they are also the most heavily studied, which can make them look more important than they are. A protective factor works the same way in reverse, lowering the chance rather than raising it.
How large is the risk?
Reporting usually quotes the relative version: the rate among the exposed divided by the rate among the unexposed. Doubling a rare risk leaves it rare, so a doubling can sound alarming while changing very little in absolute terms. The absolute version answers the question most people actually have, which is how many out of a large group are affected either way. Both describe groups. Neither predicts an individual, and most people who develop a common disease carry no striking risk factor at all, while many who carry several never develop it. A family history is among the most informative factors precisely because it captures inherited and shared influences together.
