research base
Meaning of research base: The organization that designs a trial and hands the protocol to the community sites that actually enroll people.
Definition of research base
A research base is the institution or consortium that develops clinical trial protocols, coordinates the study and analyzes the pooled results for a network of affiliated sites. It supplies the scientific question and the administration, while the affiliated hospitals and clinics supply the participants. The arrangement allows people to join a trial at a local center instead of traveling to a large academic hospital.
What does it actually do?
It writes the protocol, secures ethical review, trains and certifies the participating sites, distributes whatever the study requires, collects and cleans the data, holds the statistical plan agreed before results are seen, and publishes the outcome. A base is typically a cancer center, a university department, or a cooperative group of investigators working across many institutions. What it does not necessarily do is treat anyone, since a clinical trial can be designed in one place and conducted entirely in others.
Why does the arrangement exist?
Because most people are treated close to home rather than at academic centers. A study that recruited only where it was designed would fill slowly and would end up describing a narrow group of participants, often younger and healthier than the people who will later receive the treatment. Pushing protocols out to community practices widens both the pace of recruitment and the range of people studied, so the answer generalizes better. The local practice gains access to a research study it could never have designed or funded alone, and the base gains the numbers it needs.
How does it differ from a contract research organization?
| Role | Who owns the question | How it is funded | Enrolls participants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research base | The base itself | Usually a public grant | Not necessarily |
| Affiliated site | Follows the protocol | Reimbursed per participant | Yes |
| Contract research organization | The paying sponsor | Commercial contract | No |
The distinction is one of ownership rather than activity. Both write protocols and manage data, but a commercial organization is hired to run a study for whoever pays, while a base holds the scientific question as its own and answers for the result.
Used in a sentence
The protocol was developed by the research base and opened at affiliated community sites.
Good to know
A research base designs and coordinates the study rather than treating participants, who are enrolled and cared for at affiliated sites, so the base and the treating center are usually separate organizations.
