Provenge
Meaning of Provenge: A treatment manufactured one patient at a time, which is why it is called a vaccine even though it treats rather than prevents.
Definition of Provenge
Provenge is the brand name of sipuleucel-T, a cancer treatment made individually for each person from their own immune cells. White cells are collected from the blood, exposed outside the body to a protein found on prostate cancer cells, then returned by infusion so they can prompt an attack on the tumor. It is used in advanced prostate cancer.
How is it made?
The process runs as a loop for each person. Blood is passed through a machine that skims off the white cells and returns the rest, a procedure called leukapheresis. Those cells go to a manufacturing site and are cultured with a fusion molecule: a protein carried by most prostate cancer cells joined to a signal that activates immune cells. The activated cells are shipped back and infused. The cycle is repeated three times, roughly two weeks apart, so every infusion is a separate manufacturing run with a short shelf life.
Why is it called a vaccine when it does not prevent cancer?
Vaccine here means teaching the immune system to recognize a target, not preventing an illness. An ordinary vaccine presents a fragment of a microbe before any infection. This one presents a fragment of the tumor to cells taken from someone who already has the disease, so it is described as a therapeutic vaccine. The distinction matters because expectations differ: tumors do not reliably shrink, and scans can look unchanged while survival differs.
How does it differ from other immune treatments?
| Approach | What is given |
|---|---|
| Cellular vaccine | The recipient's own cells, primed against a tumor protein |
| Checkpoint inhibitor | An antibody that releases a brake on immune cells |
| CAR T cell | The recipient's own T cells, genetically re-engineered |
| Hormone therapy | A drug that removes the fuel the tumor depends on |
It is used where prostate cancer has spread and no longer responds to hormone treatment, in people who still feel well or have few symptoms. Sipuleucel-T is the generic name for the identical product, and the two names appear interchangeably in records, which is the only thing the older one-line dictionary entry conveyed.

Used in a sentence
Provenge was given as three infusions following leukapheresis.
Good to know
Each dose is manufactured from the recipient's own collected cells, so the treatment follows a fixed schedule of collections and infusions, and its effect is judged by survival rather than by tumor shrinkage on scans.
