Definition of pons
The pons is the middle section of the brainstem, a rounded swelling sitting between the midbrain above and the medulla below, in front of the cerebellum. It carries the nerve fiber highways running between the brain and the spinal cord, houses the control centers for chewing, facial movement, sideways eye movement, hearing and balance, and contributes to the rhythm of breathing.
Why is it called a bridge?
Because of what crosses its front surface. Broad bands of fibers sweep around the outside from one side to the other and vanish into the cerebellum behind, giving the appearance of a bridge slung across the brainstem. Those bands carry copies of movement instructions from the front of the brain to the cerebellum, which uses them to smooth and time what the body actually does. The name records the appearance rather than the job, and the crossing is less a bridge between two halves than a relay running from the front of the brain around to the back.

All of that is packed into a small block of tissue, and that density is exactly why damage there produces several unrelated-looking problems at once.
What goes wrong there?
Damage produces combinations that are almost diagnostic in themselves. A stroke on one side typically weakens the face on that side while weakening the arm and leg on the other, because the facial fibers have already reached their destination whereas the limb fibers have not yet crossed. A blockage in the artery running up the front of the brainstem can destroy the movement pathways while sparing those that sustain awareness, producing the locked-in state: fully conscious, unable to move or speak, with vertical eye movement and blinking left as the only means of answering. Bleeding into the structure causes deep unconsciousness with pinpoint pupils. In children, a tumor spreading diffusely through it is among the hardest of all brain tumor diagnoses, because the tissue involved cannot be removed without destroying what it carries. Within the nervous system it works as an unavoidable crossing point, which is the source of both its usefulness and its vulnerability.
