Definition of pineal organ
Pineal organ is an alternative name for the pineal gland, the small endocrine structure of the epithalamus lying on the midline between the two halves of the brain, at the back wall of the third ventricle. Why is it called an organ?
In fish, amphibians and many reptiles the pineal holds true photoreceptor cells and reads light through a thin patch of skull directly, and in some lizards it forms a small third eye complete with a lens and a retina of its own. Deep veins converge behind the gland, and that traffic is a large part of why operating in the region is difficult.
