Definition of latent
Latent describes something that is present but silent: an infection, a disease process or a trait that exists in the body without causing symptoms or showing up on ordinary examination. A latent state can persist for many years, and it can end at any point, so the word says nothing about whether the hidden process will ever become active.

How does a latent infection work?
Some microbes have a way of surviving without multiplying. The chickenpox virus retreats into nerve roots and sits there for life, sometimes reappearing much later as shingles. Herpes simplex does much the same. Tuberculosis bacteria are walled off inside small clumps of immune cells and can persist there without causing illness, held in check rather than eliminated. In each case a person carries the organism, has no symptoms, and may show a positive test that reflects past exposure rather than present disease.
How is it different from incubation or remission?
These are three different silences. An incubation period is the short stretch after infection before symptoms begin, and it ends in illness. Latency has no set length and may never end at all. Remission means a disease that was active has quieted down, usually under treatment. A condition called latent has often never been active in that person. The distinction is practical, because latent disease may be treated to stop it waking, while an incubating infection is already on its way.
Why does it matter that something is only latent?
A positive test in someone with no symptoms raises a different question from the same result in someone who is unwell. It usually records an encounter the immune system contained. Whether that matters depends on the chance of reactivation, which climbs when immunity weakens through illness, advancing age or medicines that suppress it. This is why testing for latent infection is routine before certain immune suppressing treatments are started, and why a latent finding is recorded in the notes even when nothing is done about it.
