Definition of esomeprazole

Esomeprazole is a medication belonging to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, which reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach. It is used to treat conditions caused or worsened by excess stomach acid, including gastroesophageal reflux disease and certain ulcers of the stomach and upper intestine.

Esomeprazole works by blocking the pump mechanism within stomach lining cells that is directly responsible for secreting acid, which lowers the acidity of stomach contents more completely and for a longer duration than many older acid reducing medications.

Esomeprazole is also used in combination with antibiotics to help treat infection with Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium associated with certain ulcers, and is sometimes used to protect the stomach lining in people taking medications, such as certain pain relievers, that can otherwise irritate it.
