The resulting extreme cold damages the tissue at a cellular level, and the treated tissue is gradually broken down and absorbed or cleared by the body afterward.
Cryoablation is used to treat certain tumors, including some kidney and prostate tumors, as well as some abnormal heart tissue responsible for certain rhythm disturbances, and it is generally guided by imaging to help position the probe precisely and to monitor the extent of the frozen area during the procedure.
