A booster is an additional dose of a vaccine given some time after the first course, to renew or strengthen protection that has weakened. It works on immune memory. The cells kept from the earlier doses recognize the target at once, multiply quickly, and produce antibodies in greater quantity and of better quality than the first response managed.

Why does protection fade?

Antibody levels fall over months to years after the first course, because the cells that produce them are gradually lost. Memory cells persist far longer, but they need a few days to react, and for some infections that delay is enough for illness to take hold. Not every vaccine needs repeating: some produce lifelong protection after a full course, while others require regular reinforcement. A separate reason for a repeat dose is that the organism itself changes, as influenza viruses do, so protection built against an earlier version becomes a poor match.

What happens in the body?

What are reactions like?

A sore arm, tiredness, headache, aching muscles and a mild fever for a day or two are common, and they reflect the immune system responding vigorously rather than anything going wrong. Reactions are sometimes brisker after a booster than after the first dose for exactly that reason. Serious reactions are rare. Records of previous doses matter, since a dose given to someone with no prior exposure produces the slower primary response and does not have the effect a booster is meant to have on immune function.
