Definition of acupuncture
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting very thin needles through the skin at defined points on the body. It originated in traditional Chinese medicine, where the points sit along channels said to carry a vital energy, and it is now used mainly as a complementary approach to pain and other symptoms alongside conventional care.
What happens during a session?
The needles are solid, single-use and far finer than the hollow needles used for injections, which is why insertion is usually felt as a dull ache or a spreading heaviness rather than a sharp jab. They are placed to varying depths depending on the site, left in position for a period, and sometimes rotated, warmed, or connected to a weak electric current. Which points are chosen depends on the practitioner's training: some work from classical channel maps, some from tender spots in muscle, and some from anatomical reasoning about nerves and connective tissue.

How might it work?
No single mechanism is settled. Proposals with some experimental support include the local release of pain-modulating chemicals such as endorphins, changes in how spinal cord neurons pass pain signals upward, small changes in blood flow and in the connective tissue that the needle twists around, and effects on the autonomic nervous system. Expectation also plays a measurable part, as it does throughout pain research. A recurring finding is that trials comparing real needling against sham needling often show a smaller gap than either shows against no treatment at all, and how to read that result remains the central disagreement in the field. As a form of complementary and alternative medicine it is used beside conventional treatment rather than instead of it. Serious harm is uncommon in trained hands, with bruising, brief soreness and fainting the usual reports, and punctured lung a rare event when needling near the chest.
