Vaccination is the giving of a vaccine, a preparation that teaches the immune system to recognize a particular germ without causing the illness it protects against. A vaccine may contain a weakened or killed organism, a piece of one, an inactivated toxin, or genetic instructions the body uses to make a piece. The response it provokes is remembered.

How does it produce protection?

A first meeting with any germ produces a slow reply. Days pass while the intruder is identified, the few cells that recognize it are selected, and those cells multiply into an army. The illness happens inside that gap. Vaccination stages the first meeting under safe conditions, so the slow work is finished in advance. Cells that recognize the target survive afterward as memory, and a later immune response to the real organism begins within hours rather than days. Antibody levels in the blood fall over time, which is why booster doses exist for some vaccines, but the memory cells behind them persist far longer than the antibodies, and protection against severe illness generally outlasts protection against catching the infection at all.

How does vaccination differ from immunization?

Vaccination is the act of giving the dose. Immunization is the process of becoming protected, which the act is meant to produce but cannot guarantee, since the response depends on the person as much as on the product. The difference surfaces in records: a vaccination history lists doses given, while evidence of immunity means a measured antibody level or a documented past infection. Protection is not purely individual either. Once enough of a population responds, the organism runs short of susceptible people to pass through, which shelters those who cannot be vaccinated or did not respond, an effect that weakens as coverage falls.
