Definition of replicate

Replicate means to make a copy, or to repeat something so that it produces the same result again. In biology it describes cells, genetic material and infectious organisms making copies of themselves. In research it describes running the same measurement or experiment a second time to see whether the finding holds. Both senses turn on faithful repetition.

How does replication work in biology?

Genetic material is copied before a cell divides. The two strands of the double helix separate, each serves as a template, and enzymes assemble a matching partner strand along it, producing two identical copies where there was one. Bacteria copy their single circular chromosome and then split in two. Viruses cannot do any of this alone, because they carry no machinery of their own. They enter a host cell and redirect its equipment to build the parts of new virus particles, which are assembled and released to infect further cells. Proofreading enzymes catch most copying errors, but not all, and the survivors become mutations. That leak is not a flaw in the story but the engine of it: it is how antibiotic resistance emerges and how new viral variants appear.

Viral load measures how much virus is being produced, and antiviral treatment aims to drive that figure down; in hepatitis C virus infection, sustained suppression of replication after treatment is the measure of cure. Actively replicating organisms behave differently from dormant ones, which is why latent tuberculosis and a resting herpes virus can persist for years without producing symptoms and without responding to drugs that only work on organisms in the act of copying themselves.
