Definition of radioactive fallout
Radioactive fallout is the mixture of radioactive particles thrown into the atmosphere by a nuclear detonation or a reactor accident that later settles back to the ground. It contains fission products, activated soil and structural debris, and unspent fuel. The heaviest particles land close by within hours, while finer material can drift across continents before coming down, often washed out in rain.
Why does it harm health?
Two separate routes matter. Particles resting on the ground and on surfaces send out penetrating radiation that reaches the body from outside. Far more important over a lifetime is contamination taken inside, by breathing dust, by eating crops and dairy produce grown on contaminated land, or by drinking affected water. Once inside, an isotope keeps irradiating the tissue that holds it for as long as it stays there and remains radioactive. Whether that is a few days or several decades depends on the element, and so does which organ receives the dose.

Why were children affected most after Chernobyl?
Because of the first row of that table. Milk from cows grazing contaminated pasture carried iodine-131 to children, whose smaller and more active thyroid glands concentrate iodine efficiently. A sharp rise in thyroid cancer in exposed children followed, and it remains the clearest health consequence tied to that release. Flooding the gland with ordinary iodine leaves no room for the radioactive form, which is the reasoning behind stockpiling potassium iodide tablets near reactors. This is a different situation from radioactive iodine given deliberately as treatment, where the same uptake is used to destroy thyroid tissue on purpose.
