The nasopharynx is the uppermost portion of the pharynx, the muscular tube that forms the throat, situated directly behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate. Air passing through the nose enters the nasopharynx before continuing down through the lower parts of the throat toward the lungs.
An opening on each side of the nasopharynx marks the entrance of the eustachian tube, a narrow passage that connects this region to the middle ear and helps equalize air pressure on either side of the eardrum. Adenoid tissue, a mass of lymphoid tissue involved in immune defense, is also located in the nasopharynx, particularly prominent in children before it typically shrinks with age.
Because the nasopharynx connects directly to the middle ear through the eustachian tube, inflammation or blockage in this region, such as from a cold or enlarged adenoids, can interfere with normal ear pressure equalization and contribute to middle ear symptoms.
