Definition of laser
A laser is a device that produces a narrow beam of light of a single wavelength, with all its waves in step, so that energy can be concentrated on a very small area. In medicine that concentration is used to cut tissue, destroy it deliberately, seal small blood vessels, or reshape a surface precisely.
What makes laser light different?
The name is an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation, which describes how the beam is generated: energy is pumped into a material until its atoms release light in lockstep rather than at random. Three properties follow. The light is a single wavelength rather than a mixture, so it interacts with tissue predictably. The waves are in phase with one another. And the beam stays narrow over distance instead of spreading, so nearly all the energy lands where it is aimed. That is the whole basis of its usefulness as a medical device: heat can be delivered to a spot smaller than a pinhead while tissue a short distance away is unaffected.
Why does the wavelength matter?
Tissue does not absorb all light equally. Each wavelength is taken up strongly by particular components and passes through the rest, so the choice of laser determines what is affected and how deeply.

Pulse length matters as much as wavelength: a short enough pulse heats the target and stops before the heat spreads to what surrounds it.
Where is it used?
Eye surgery was among the earliest applications and remains one of the largest, sealing retinal tears, opening a clouded membrane after cataract surgery and reshaping the cornea. Dermatology uses lasers for vascular and pigmented lesions, scars and hair. In laser surgery more broadly they cut and seal simultaneously, which reduces bleeding, and in cancer care they remove or debulk accessible tumors. Low power laser therapy is applied to pain and to swelling after lymph node surgery, an area where evidence remains limited compared with the surgical uses. Every setting requires eye protection for everyone in the room, since a stray reflection carries the same concentrated energy as the beam.
