Definition of glucuronic acid

Glucuronic acid is a sugar acid made from glucose by oxidizing one end of the molecule. Attached to a carrier, it becomes the tag the liver hooks onto drugs, hormones and waste products, converting them into water-soluble forms that leave in urine or bile. The same acid is also a structural building block of cartilage, joint fluid and other connective tissues.

How does it help clear substances from the body?

Many substances the body needs to be rid of do not dissolve in water, and anything that does not dissolve cannot be removed by the kidney. The liver solves this by attaching glucuronic acid to the offending molecule, a step called glucuronidation. The product is bulkier, carries an electrical charge and dissolves readily, so it can be filtered into urine or pumped into bile and passed out through the gut. A family of enzymes performs the attachment, drawing the acid from an activated carrier form rather than using it free.

What is its structural role?

Long chains alternating glucuronic acid with other sugars form the springy molecules that hold water inside tissue. Hyaluronic acid, built this way, gives cartilage its cushioning and joint fluid its slipperiness, and related chains sit in skin, blood vessel walls and the jelly inside the eye. The charged acid groups pull water in strongly, which is what lets these tissues resist compression.

Is it the same as glucose?

Closely related but not interchangeable. Glucose is a plain six-carbon sugar and the body burns it for energy. Glucuronic acid is that same skeleton with the far end oxidized into an acid group, a change that takes it out of the energy pathways and gives it the charge its other jobs depend on. The body makes its own supply from glucose and does not rely on the diet for it.
