Definition of Gerson therapy
Gerson therapy is an alternative regimen promoted for cancer and other chronic illnesses, built around a saltless organic vegetarian diet, hourly glasses of freshly pressed juice, coffee enemas, and supplements including potassium, iodine solution, thyroid extract, liver extract and digestive enzymes. Its founder held that disease follows from a disturbance of sodium and potassium inside cells, a model modern cell biology does not support.

It is demanding, and it is intended to be followed for a year or more.

The reasoning behind it was that illness follows an imbalance of salts within cells, correctable by flooding the body with potassium-rich juice while withholding sodium. Cell chemistry does not work that way, and the enemas were added on a separate theory about detoxifying the liver.
What does the evidence show?
No controlled trial has ever tested it. What exists is a set of case series published by the clinic and its supporters, in which the people described were selected rather than enrolled, outcomes were not independently verified, and nobody received a different treatment for comparison. Reviews by national cancer organizations have concluded there is no evidence it treats the disease. Individual accounts of recovery cannot settle the matter, since a few cancers regress without treatment and many people follow this regimen alongside conventional care. Only a clinical trial built for the purpose could separate those threads, and none has been run.
What harms have been reported?
They are documented rather than theoretical, and they arise mainly from the enemas and from the extreme composition of the diet. Repeated coffee enemas have caused dangerous falls in blood salts, inflammation of the colon and, in reported deaths, overwhelming infection. Injected liver extract has transmitted bacterial infection. A saltless, protein-poor diet in someone already losing weight through illness deepens malnutrition. The other recorded consequence is time, because the regimen is often adopted in place of treatment of established benefit, and that delay alters what remains possible later.
