Definition of EMR

EMR most often stands for electromagnetic radiation, energy that travels as waves carrying linked electric and magnetic fields. It spans an enormous range of energies, from radio waves at the low end through visible light to gamma rays at the high end. The energy of a given wave, far more than its source, determines what happens when it meets living tissue.

What separates ionizing from non-ionizing radiation?

This is the division that matters, and the everyday word radiation blurs it badly. Low-energy waves can make molecules vibrate, which is felt as warmth, but they cannot dislodge an electron from an atom. High-energy waves can, and a dislodged electron leaves a reactive fragment behind that may break chemical bonds, including bonds in DNA. That is the mechanism behind the cancer risk attached to radiation exposure, and it applies only above the threshold where ionization becomes possible.

How is it used in medicine?

Almost every band has a use. Radio waves supply the signal in magnetic resonance imaging, which is why that scan involves no ionizing exposure at all. Microwaves heat tissue deliberately in ablation. Infrared underlies contactless thermometers and several surgical lasers. Visible light carries the image back from an endoscope and treats newborn jaundice. Ultraviolet is used in controlled doses for some skin conditions. X-rays pass through soft tissue but are stopped by bone and dense material, which is what makes radiography and computed tomography possible, and gamma rays from radioactive tracers or treatment machines are used because they penetrate deeply.

Does EMR always mean electromagnetic radiation?

No, and the ambiguity causes real confusion. In hospital administration and most clinical software, EMR stands for electronic medical record. In gastroenterology it stands for endoscopic mucosal resection, a technique for removing a lesion from the lining of the gut through an endoscope. Only in physics and imaging does it reliably mean electromagnetic radiation, so the surrounding subject matter has to settle it.
