Definition of element
An element is a substance made of only one kind of atom, which is why it cannot be broken into anything simpler by ordinary chemical means. The number of protons in that atom, called the atomic number, is what identifies it and separates it from every other element. More than one hundred are recognized, and a few dozen appear in living tissue.
Which elements build the body?
Four elements make up the overwhelming majority of body mass: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. Most of that is water and the carbon based molecules of protein, fat and carbohydrate. Next come calcium and phosphorus, locked mainly into the mineral of bone and teeth, followed by potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine and magnesium. Together this short list accounts for nearly everything a body is made of, which is a reminder that biological complexity comes from arrangement rather than from exotic ingredients.
What is a trace element?
A trace element is one the body needs in very small quantities, including iron, zinc, copper, iodine, selenium, manganese and molybdenum. They are rarely structural. Instead they sit at the working center of a protein and make a chemical reaction possible: iron holds oxygen inside hemoglobin, iodine is built directly into thyroid hormone, and zinc props open the shape of hundreds of enzymes. Because so little is needed, both shortage and excess matter, and for several trace elements the gap between too little and too much is narrow.
Is an element in the body the same as the pure element?

The distinction is not academic. Chlorine as a gas is poisonous, yet the chloride ion is essential and present in every cell. When a laboratory report lists sodium, potassium or calcium, it is reporting ions in solution, not the metals themselves, and the chemical form also governs how much of a swallowed element is actually absorbed.
