Definition of electrolyte

An electrolyte is a substance that splits into electrically charged particles, called ions, once dissolved in water or body fluid. Sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium and phosphate are the ones routinely measured in medicine. Their charge is what lets nerves and muscle generate signals, and what holds water in the right compartments of the body.

How does the body keep them steady?

The kidney is the main regulator, filtering the entire blood volume many times a day and then reclaiming what is needed while letting the surplus go. Hormones set the dials. Aldosterone tells the kidney to hold sodium and shed potassium. Antidiuretic hormone governs how much water is retained, which changes sodium concentration without changing the amount of sodium present. Parathyroid hormone and vitamin D control calcium and phosphate between bone, gut and kidney. Because so much passes through one organ, a kidney function test is usually read alongside the electrolyte results.

Why are they measured together?

Because they move together. Losing fluid through vomiting or diarrhea shifts several at once. Correcting one in isolation can unmask another, and a low potassium level often refuses to rise while magnesium remains depleted. Charge must also balance overall, so an unexplained gap between the measured positive and negative ions is itself a clue that an unmeasured acid is present. Small shifts matter most for potassium and calcium, both of which alter the electrical behavior of the heart well before any other tissue complains.
