Ejaculation occurs in two coordinated phases, an initial phase in which semen moves into the portion of the urethra near the base of the penis, followed by a second phase in which rhythmic muscle contractions expel the semen from the body. Occasional ejaculation can also occur during sleep, independent of sexual activity, particularly in younger individuals.
