DACA, also written acridine carboxamide, is an experimental anticancer compound that slides between the two strands of DNA and blocks topoisomerase, the enzyme cells use to untangle DNA before dividing. What does blocking topoisomerase do?
DNA is stored tightly wound, and it has to be unwound before it can be copied. Topoisomerase enzymes manage this by cutting one strand or both, letting the tension release, and then joining the cut back together.
