Definition of cell-to-cell signaling
Cell-to-cell signaling is the process by which one cell changes the behavior of another. A signal molecule is released or displayed on a surface, a receiving cell detects it with a matching receptor, and that detection alters what the receiving cell does. The answer depends on which receptors the receiving cell carries, so one signal can order one cell to divide and another to die.
How far does a signal travel?
Distance separates the main modes, and the same molecule can act over more than one of them. Some signals enter the bloodstream and reach the whole body slowly. Some drift only as far as the cells next door and are broken down within seconds. Some act back on the cell that made them, reinforcing whatever it is already doing. Others never leave the surface at all: two cells press together and a molecule anchored on one touches a receptor on the other, so the message passes only where there is contact. Neighboring cells may also be joined by channels through which small molecules and electrical charge move directly.

Most signal molecules dissolve in water and cannot cross the fatty membrane, so they wait outside on a receptor that spans it. Binding changes the shape of the receptor's inner end, and that starts a relay of proteins inside, each activating many copies of the next, so a handful of molecules outside produces a large answer within. Signals built from fat, steroid hormones among them, pass straight through the membrane and act on receptors that switch genes on or off. Either route is a signaling pathway.
Why does the same signal produce different answers?
Because the meaning sits in the receiver. A cell without the matching receptor is deaf to a signal saturating the fluid around it. Two cells that both carry the receptor can wire it to opposite outcomes. Duration matters as well: a brief pulse and a sustained one are read as different instructions, and receptors are withdrawn from the surface when stimulation persists, which is why an unrelenting signal produces a fading response. Cancer is in large part a disease of these controls, with receptors locked in the on position and shouting instructions that nothing outside has sent.
