Definition of biologic agent
A biologic agent is a medicine produced by or extracted from a living system rather than assembled through chemical synthesis. Vaccines, antibodies, insulin, clotting factors, blood products and cell therapies all belong to the group. Because these are large, complex molecules grown inside living cells, they are sensitive to handling and cannot be copied exactly.

Why can they not be swallowed?
A biologic is a protein, or something of similar size. The digestive tract exists to break proteins into fragments, so a swallowed biologic would be digested like food long before reaching the bloodstream. Injection or infusion bypasses that. The same size explains several other features: vials are stored cold, shaking one can destroy the contents, and the immune system sometimes treats the drug as foreign and makes antibodies against it, which can blunt the effect over months.
What are they used for?
Vaccines and antitoxins were the earliest examples, drawn straight from an organism or from immunized animals. Modern biologics are mostly made by inserting a human gene into bacteria, yeast or cultured mammalian cells, which then manufacture the protein. That route produces insulin, growth hormone, clotting factors for hemophilia, and the monoclonal antibodies used in cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and severe asthma. Cell and gene therapies extend the principle further, using living cells as the treatment itself.
What is a biosimilar?
An exact copy is impossible, because the finished molecule depends on the particular cell line and process that produced it. A biosimilar is a version shown to match the original closely enough in structure, purity and effect that no meaningful clinical difference is expected. Approving one requires comparison studies rather than the straightforward chemical identity test that suffices for a generic. Cost is why they matter, since a biological drug is expensive to develop and to manufacture, and biosimilars bring competition once the original patents expire.
