Definition of ATP
ATP is the abbreviation for adenosine triphosphate, the molecule every living cell uses to move energy from the reactions that release it to the processes that consume it. Splitting off its outermost phosphate group frees energy for muscle contraction, transport across membranes and the building of new molecules, after which the cell rebuilds it and spends it again.
What does the cycle look like in practice?
The letters describe the structure: adenosine, meaning the base adenine joined to a ribose sugar, carrying three phosphate groups in a row. Removing the third leaves ADP, adenosine diphosphate, and removing another leaves AMP. Energy released by breaking down food is used to push a phosphate back on, and energy needed for work is taken by pulling one off. Nothing accumulates in the process, since the same pool of molecules shuttles between the forms continuously. A resting adult recycles an amount across a day that greatly exceeds body weight, while the quantity present at any single moment would sustain activity for only seconds. That imbalance explains why an interruption in blood supply causes trouble within minutes rather than hours.

How is it measured, and what else can the letters mean?
Laboratories usually measure it by borrowing the enzyme that makes fireflies glow. Luciferase consumes the molecule and emits light in proportion to how much is present, so a light reading becomes a measure of ATP and, indirectly, of how many living cells a sample holds. The same trick is used on hospital surfaces to check cleaning, because residue from living material glows and a clean surface does not. Beyond its energy role, ATP is one of the four building blocks of RNA and therefore sits in the path of genetic information, and it acts as a signaling molecule outside the cell. The letters are not reserved for it either. In a report on an implanted defibrillator, ATP normally means antitachycardia pacing, a device function with no connection to the molecule, so the surrounding text decides which is meant.
