Definition of Hodgkin disease
Hodgkin disease is a cancer of the lymphatic system, the network of nodes and vessels that carries immune cells and drains fluid from tissue. It is now more often called Hodgkin lymphoma. The classical form is recognized under the microscope by large abnormal cells named after the pathologists who described them, scattered among a much larger crowd of normal immune cells.
Why did the name change?
The condition was described long before anyone knew what it was, and it was named for the physician who first reported the pattern. Once the cancerous cells were traced back to B lymphocytes, the older name became misleading: it is a lymphoma, and calling it a disease set it apart from the family it belongs to. Hodgkin lymphoma is now the standard term, while Hodgkin disease survives in older records, in conversation and in the names of some organizations. Both refer to exactly the same condition, and the change carries no implication at all for how it behaves or how it is treated.

The orderly spread is genuinely useful information, because knowing where the disease is likely to travel next shapes how far it is looked for once it has been found.
Is every form defined by the same cell?
No, and this is a common misreading. The Reed-Sternberg cell defines classical Hodgkin lymphoma, which accounts for the great majority of cases and divides further according to what surrounds those cells. The other form, nodular lymphocyte predominant, contains a different abnormal cell, popcorn shaped rather than the classic large cell with two prominent nuclei. It carries different surface markers, behaves more slowly, and is now often classified apart from classical disease altogether. Telling the two apart matters because the treatment approach differs. What both share is the odd fact that malignant cells are heavily outnumbered by ordinary immune cells drawn in around them, so a node under the microscope looks mostly reactive with only a scattering of the cells that make the diagnosis.
